The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently certified several Initiative Petitions filed by the Retailers Association of Massachusetts. The Association will have until December 6, 2017 to collect the requisite amount of signatures for any petition to appear on a ballot. The Initiative Petitions are as follows:
- Initiative Petition 17-19 – Would reduce the state sales and use tax to 4.5 percent and create an annual August sales tax holiday
- Initiative Petition 17-20 – Would reduce the state sales and use to to 4.5 percent.
- Initiative Petition 17-21 – Would reduce the state sales and use tax to 5 percent and create an annual August sales tax holiday
- Initiative Petition 17-22 – Would reduce the state sales and use taxes from to 5 percent.
While Massachusetts voters rejected a petition to decrease the sales tax to 3 percent back in 2010, the popularity of the annual sales tax holiday (and the failure of the legislature to approve a holiday in recent years) may cause at least some individuals to re-think their position.
