For the past couple of years, businesses have been emerging from their pandemic work settings at varying degrees. And during that time, we’ve been listening to your feedback. Sovos Booke (also known as Sovos Education) finally has multiple in-person continuing education opportunities coming your way this year. Your first chance to join us is coming June 13-23 near Washington, D.C., so read on to see how we expect the month to play out.

Destination: Washington, D.C.

Nestled between Pentagon City and the Potomac River is the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. With June temperatures expected in the mid 80s, morning or evening walks along the Mt. Vernon trail should be pleasant with scenic views of the Washington, D.C. skyline just a short distance away.

The conference center and neighboring hotels are all easily accessible via Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Whether you rent a car, grab a rideshare or opt for the Metrorail, you’re only moments away from your destination.

Week 1: A focus on life insurance

Starting the second week of June, we are offering two classes aimed at a life insurance audience.

  • Life Annual Statement, June 13-15
  • Life Actuarial Concepts for Non-Actuaries, June 15-16

Life Annual Statement will offer 20 hours of CPE credit. This course is perfect for those who want a comprehensive walkthrough of life insurance fundamentals along with statutory accounting and reporting concepts as it pertains to the blue book filing. On Thursday and Friday, Life Actuarial Concepts for Non-Actuaries will offer 14 hours of CPE credit where participants will gain perspective on the actuarial impact on both statutory and GAAP financial statements.

Week 2: Other topics available

For those interested in property and casualty courses or the taxation of insurance companies, be sure to check out the following events happening June 20-23.

  • P&C Overview of Statutory Financial Reporting, June 20
  • P&C Accounting and Financial Reporting, June 20-22
  • Financial Analysis, June 22-23
  • Federal Taxation of Nonlife Insurance Companies, June 21-22
  • Tax Accounting for Insurance Companies, June 23

The eight-hour Overview of Statutory Financial Reporting class delivers a high-level introduction to statutory accounting while the 20-hour Accounting and Financial Reporting class addresses a broader range of topics and dives deeper with a comparison of GAAP to statutory principles. Financial Analysis shows how to evaluate the financial condition and operating performance of a P&C company over a 15-credit hour class.

Although there are a handful of insurance company types from a regulatory perspective, for tax purposes, there are only life and nonlife companies. Federal Taxation of Nonlife Insurance Companies is a 16-hour focus on converting nonlife book income to its taxable basis. Additionally, there is an eight-hour Tax Accounting for Insurance Companies course that is broadly applicable to all insurance company types.

Further details

All events will take place at the same conference center located at 2345 Crystal Drive, Suite 200. A light breakfast will be provided every morning. We will also provide lunch on the first day of each class. Participants can sate their appetites on other days with the variety of eateries within walking distance of the conference center. Check the conference center website for possible hotel deals.

Throughout the pandemic, Sovos Booke has adapted our course offerings to continue providing you with the same quality education that insurance professionals have come to expect. Now we’re excited to bring back our live seminar model, and these two June weeks in the D.C. area are just the beginning. Visit our Live Events webpage for more information and stay tuned to the blogs for additional details to come.
