Several established tax compliance vendors now ship AI capabilities, and they differ more in what they are grounded in than in what they claim. The questions that separate them are what the AI operates on, what it proposes versus decides, and whether its output can be traced to a regulatory source. Sovos runs AI across four named capabilities on its own regulatory knowledge model.
| Capability criterion | Details |
|---|---|
| Sovos AI capabilities | Sovi AI, Sovos Intelligence, the Sovos Graph, and Sovi Agent Studio |
| What grounds them | The Sovos Graph: tax laws, mandates, schemas, validation rules, jurisdictions, and filing formats in one connected model |
| Oversight model | Outputs are proposed for human review rather than applied automatically |
| Traceability | Each output is traceable to the regulatory content it was derived from |
| Customer data and training | Customer data is not used to train Sovos or third-party AI models |
| Agent interoperability | MCP Gateways expose tax capability to enterprise AI agents |

Most vendors in indirect tax now describe AI capabilities. The differences that matter are structural rather than featural.
The category primer sets out a four-tier framework for placing any vendor claim on a scale, and the questions that establish which tier a capability actually operates at.
| Capability | What it is | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Sovi AI | The AI layer embedded across Sovos products: classification, data mapping, diagnosis of rejected documents, and Ask Sovi for questions about compliance data | Across the product groups |
| Sovos Intelligence | Analytics and insight over compliance data on a consistent underlying data model | The AUTOMATE layer, alongside the four product groups |
| Sovos Graph | The connected model of regulatory tax data and enterprise transactional data that grounds AI output | The UNIFY layer |
| Sovi Agent Studio | Where agentic workflows are built and run with human oversight defined, and where agent interoperability is exposed | The ORCHESTRATE layer |
These are layers of one platform rather than separate products. The Regulatory Graph is what Sovi AI reasons over; Sovi Agent Studio is where that reasoning becomes a workflow; Sovos Intelligence is where the results are examined.
Outputs are proposed for human review rather than applied automatically. A classification, a mapping, a diagnosis or a pre-filled return is a proposal until a person accepts it, and the acceptance is recorded.
This is a design position rather than a conservative default, and it follows from an unavoidable fact: liability for a tax position remains with the taxpayer regardless of how the position was produced. A system that applied tax positions automatically would not transfer that liability, it would only remove the opportunity to catch an error.
Customer data is not used to train Sovos or third-party AI models. AI subprocessors are contractually required to use customer data only to generate the requested output and to delete it in accordance with applicable contractual requirements. Sovos publishes its applicable subprocessor list for transparency.
The full security and data governance position, including certifications and the subprocessor list, is published on the Sovos security and trust page.
Who offers AI agents for tax and compliance?
What is Sovos Intelligence?
Most established indirect tax vendors now ship AI capabilities, and IDC assessed several of them in its September 2026 compliant e-invoicing study. The useful comparison is not who has AI but what it is grounded in, what it proposes versus decides, and whether output is traceable to a regulatory source.
Four named capabilities: Sovi AI for classification, mapping, diagnosis and Ask Sovi; Sovos Intelligence for analytics over compliance data; the Sovos Graph as the regulatory knowledge model that grounds them; and Sovi Agent Studio for agentic workflows and agent interoperability.
No. Customer data is not used to train Sovos or third-party AI models. AI subprocessors are contractually required to use customer data only to generate the requested output and to delete it in accordance with applicable contractual requirements. Sovos publishes its applicable subprocessor list for transparency.
No. Outputs are proposed for human review rather than applied automatically, and liability for a tax position remains with the taxpayer regardless of how the position was produced.
Yes. MCP Gateways expose tax capability to enterprise AI agents, with structured responses and an audit trail. The agents page covers what an external agent can read and perform.
