Montana recently released the 2025 Employer and Information Agent Guide. There are several significant changes. Most notably, beginning in 2026, taxpayers required to file form 1099-DA (Digital Assets) with the IRS will be required to file form 1099-DA with Montana. Form 1099-DA is a new federal form that will be used to report digital asset transactions. Federally, the 1099-DA reporting requirement is set to be effective for tax year 2025 transactions reported in 2026. See this blog for more information about the federal 1099-DA requirements.

This appears to make Montana the first state to introduce a 1099-DA requirement in its guidance. At this time, there is no information on how Montana will support 1099-DA filing. Montana has not issued guidance confirming whether it will support filing in the new IRIS format, which is the format the IRS will require for filing form 1099-DA.
