Wisconsin Publishes Updated Withholding Tax Update

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue recently published a Withholding Tax Update bulletin for tax year 2019. This bulletin contains information relating to withholding remittance and reporting, information reporting, and other tax updates relevant to employers in Wisconsin.

There are several updates listed in this bulletin, including the following:

  • Withholding deposit reports (Form WT-6) and annual reconciliation returns (WT-7) must be filed electronically through an approved submission method. Approved methods include the My Tax Account portal and e-File transmission using Department-approved specifications.
  • Beginning in 2020, the redesigned Federal Form W-4 cannot be used for Wisconsin withholding tax purposes. Due to the formatting of the new form and the removal of federal allowances, this form cannot be used for Wisconsin purposes.
  • W-2 PDF files will no longer be accepted as an electronic filing method due to low volume usage in the past. This option has also been removed from Publication 172, which contains the electronic filing specifications for W-2 records.

Please note that some information in this bulletin is still in the proposed stage and is subject to public comment and final approval. To review this bulletin in its entirety, please click here.
