During its 56th Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting, India introduced a simplified 2-teired GST structure, eliminating the previous 28% and 12% rates, with the 18% and 5% rates remaining. The reform also includes a special de-merit rate of 40% for a select few goods and services, as well as reducing the rate for a number of goods, details of which may be found in the press release published by India’s Press Information Bureau here.

This overhaul comes into effect September 22, 2025.
