Virginia Releases December Update to Specifications

Following some late changes by the IRS to Publication 1220, Virginia recently changed its 1099 specifications for forms 1099-R, 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, and 1099-K to match the modifications made to the 1220. These changes are retroactive for all filings including previous year submissions. The most notable additions are detailed below:

• Revision date updated to 12/2021 from 10/2021
• References for 1099-K forms have been added to references including 1099-R, 1099-MISC, and 1099-NEC
• 1099-K files should be named “1099K REPORT”
• Layout addendum added for 1099-K files
• Appendix L section added for 1099-K spreadsheet layout details
• Payer “A” Record for 1099-R specifications box states for positions 2-5, per Publication 1220, prior year data must be reported with this layout. Previously stated “can”
• Payer “A” Record 1099-R amount codes previously positions 28-43, now listed as 28-45
• Web upload file position numbers for 1099-R “B” Record renumbered due to mistake
• Payee “B” Record 1099-R Field positions 328-367 altered – Second Payee Name Line previously listed 328-365, now positions 328-367
• Payer “A” Record 1099-MISC note added to File positions 2, fields 2-5: Note: Per Publication 1220, prior year data must be reported with this layout
• 1099-MISC Payee “B” Field Positions 271-286 for blank/filler have been renumbered to 271-287 (corrected from 271-286)
• 1099-MISC Payee “B” Field positions 328-367 altered – Second Payee Name Line previously listed 328-365, now positions 328-367
• 1099-MISC Payee “B” Record File Position 34, field position 548 separated and added for FATCA Indicator
• Payer “A” Record 1099-NEC note added to File positions 2, fields 2-5: Note: Per Publication 1220, prior year data must be reported with this layout
• 1099-NEC Payer “A” Record amount codes previously positions 28-45, now listed as 28-47.
• 1099-NEC Payee “B” Field Positions 271-286 for blank/filler have been renumbered to 271-287 (corrected from 271-286)
• 1099-NEC Payee “B” Field positions 328-367 altered – Second Payee Name Line previously listed 328-365, now positions 328-367
