Missouri’s Department of Revenue has released electronic guidelines for electronic filings of W-2s and 1099s. This follows a prior announcement that employers filing 250 or more W-2s for tax year 2017 will need to file with the Department electronically by January 31, 2018. The Department will continue to accept W-2s from employers with fewer than 250 records through flash drives, compact discs, and on paper. Electronic filing of 1099s is optional for all filers; flash drives, compact discs, and paper will remain valid means to file 1099s for all filers.

The electronic filing guidelines for both W-2s and 1099s include instructions on how to format the files for Missouri’s Department of Revenue. The Department’s specifications for W-2s and 1099s are based upon the federal formats but have modifications specific to the state. The documents also provide direction on how to register as a bulk filer and answers to frequently asked questions.
