The Internal Revenue Service has released the first official Form 1099-LPS (Long-Term Care Premiums Paid Statement) and accompanying instructions. The instructions are a continuous-use revision for tax year 2026 and subsequent years until a superseding revision is issued.
Issuers of certified long-term care insurance must file Form 1099-LPS if, at a policyholder’s request, they provided a long-term care premium statement to the policyholder’s defined contribution plan. There is no minimum dollar threshold for reporting, all amounts must be reported. Form 1099-LPS reports the premiums and charges paid for the coverage in Box 1, and Box 2 indicates whether the insured is the policyholder (“Self”) or the policyholder’s spouse (“Spouse”).
Tax year 2026 Form 1099-LPS is due to the IRS on February 1, 2027. The recipient furnishing deadline of January 31 falls on a Sunday, so it also moves to February 1. The e-file threshold is 10 aggregate information returns, and electronic filing is only available through the new Information Return Intake System (IRIS).
