IRS Releases 2018 Draft Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement

The IRS has released its 2018 Draft Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement. There have been a number of changes to the form since its previous revision:

  • “RECIPIENT’S/LENDER’S federal identification number” and “PAYER’S/BORROWER’S taxpayer identification no.” fields have been renamed to “RECIPIENT’S/LENDER’S TIN” and “PAYER’S/BORROWER’S TIN” respectively

  • Wording in Box 7 has been changed:

    • “If address of property securing mortgage is the same as PAYER’S/BORROWER’S address, check the box, or enter the address or description in box 8”

  • Box 8 and Box 9 have been merged into Box 8

    • “Address or description of property securing mortgage (see instructions)”

  • Box 9 is now “Number of mortgaged properties”

    • Previously, that was Box 10

  • Box 10 is now “Other”
