Belgium: New IPT return template from 1 July 2026

July 21, 2026

Following the increase in the standard Belgian Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) rate from 9.25% to 9.60%, effective 1 July 2026, the Belgian Tax Authority (BETA) has published new IPT return templates, available for postal submission.

The new template must be used for all submissions where the premium due date falls on or after 1 July 2026, whilst the existing template continues to apply where the premium due date falls before that date. The templates consolidate both the monthly IPT return and the prepayment into a single submission, with dedicated sections for each element. The previous prepayment return is therefore no longer required.

BETA has communicated to SOVOS its guidance regarding cancellations and amendments of policy premiums originally subject to IPT at 9.25%. Where such transactions give rise to a negative IPT amount, these may not be declared on the new return template and must instead be recovered through BETA’s dedicated reclaim process.
