At the close of 2024, New Jersey unveiled a plan to modernize its electronic tax systems through a multi-phased implementation of the new NJ Tax Portal. The NJ Tax Portal will serve as a comprehensive, stand-alone application encompassing all tax types once fully rolled out. The state recently provided key details and deadlines for Phase 1 of the modernization effort. In this initial phase, the NJ Tax Portal will support sales and use tax, casino revenue taxes, as well as various hotel fee and occupancy taxes, among others.

From April 26, 2025, through May 14, 2025, current filing and payment systems for the tax types covered in Phase 1 will be temporarily unavailable. For returns and payments included in Phase 1 with due dates between May 1 and May 30, 2025, the state will grant a 30-day extension, and no penalties or interest will accrue. Beginning May 14, 2025, business owners and tax preparers will be able to establish NJ Tax Portal accounts for filing and paying Phase 1 tax types.

Employer withholding taxes are slated for inclusion in Phase 2 of the project. This extension and outage do not affect tax types included in Phases 2-5. No timeline has been provided for subsequent phases of the project.

More information can be found here, including the full list of tax types included in Phase 1.
