Iowa recently announced software vendor registration is open for those who support electronic transmission of W-2 wage statements and/or 1099 Information Return file formats. Registration is now open for tax year 2017, and applicants must fill out and submit the e-File Vendor Registration Form by November 1, 2017.

The Department of Revenue also released an updated version of Publication 44-082, a guide to Electronic Reporting of Wage and Tax Statements and Information Returns. This publication is used by software developers and contains the electronic filing specifications for W-2 and 1099 information returns.

There are a number of changes to the 2017 version, which is the first public release since November 2016. These changes include revisions to the language of certain rules granting greater specificity for reporting purpses. Also, new rules were added in 2017 that deal directly with the "B" and "K" records.
