The unclaimed property (UP) community will convene in Nashville starting Sunday, March 12 for the 2023 Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization (UPPO) annual conference. Approximately 600 people will descend upon the Nashville Renaissance Hotel for three and a half days of learning, networking and sharing of ideas. According to UPPO, the “conference integrates networking and premier education into every aspect of the agenda, providing attendees with the information and connections needed to minimize their companies’ risk, and achieve and sustain compliance with unclaimed property laws and regulations.”

Here are five events to look forward to during the conference.

  1. Diverse agenda – UPPO offers a conference with a jam-packed learning agenda covering all unclaimed property issues from the ABCs of UP to VDA expectations. The agenda appeals to unclaimed property professionals at all levels as there are four learning tracks: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Special Focus.
  2. Expert presentations – Don’t miss the experts from Sovos who will be presenting on a variety of topics. On Monday, March 13, Brian McCarthy, senior consulting manager and Ann Fulmer, director of consulting services, will be leading industry breakout sessions surrounding P&C Insurance and Life Insurance issues. Also, on March 13 at 9 a.m. CT, Paola Narez, senior consulting manager, will provide helpful information on what to do after receiving an audit notice. Learn about effective strategies for broad record requests, remediation and calculation. Following Paola’s presentation, join Laurie Andrews, principal consulting director, as she addresses issues around fraud by discussing prevention and detection strategies to mitigate fraud potential. On Tuesday, March 14, I will be discussing the latest legislative updates at 10:45 a.m. CT. Later that day, I will also sit on a panel discussing the Holders Coalition, what they do and their top initiatives from the past year. Finally, join Ann Fulmer as she presents “Tales from the Crypto,” old concepts, definitions, operations, statutes and regulatory structures that don’t fit anymore. You can catch Ann’s presentation on Marth 14 at 10:45 a.m. CT.
  3. Scholarship program – UPPO’s scholarship program was created to financially assist members and members’ families continue their education in college or vocational school programs. After the Monday session ends, join the fun at this year’s scholarship program event from 5-6 p.m. CT. This year will feature line dancing lessons where you can learn basic steps and progress to well-known country line dances. It’s sure to be a great time and a lot of laughs.
  4. All-conference event – Don’t miss the all-conference event at the renowned Country Music Hall of Fame. Enjoy dinner, drinks and a good time while mingling with conference attendees and taking in world class exhibitions. The event takes place Tuesday, March 14, from 6:30 – 10 p.m. CT.
  5. Networking – Many key influencers in unclaimed property will be attending the conference, which is why attendees should take advantage of the endless networking opportunities. Additionally, do not miss the industry breakout sessions where you can informally and openly converse with unclaimed property professionals in your industry. It is always helpful to hear how other companies are handling the same issues you may be encountering.
